🌐 Blog Like a Community

Robert wrote a post titled Blog Like a Painter a couple of days ago with some sound advice about how to approach your blog and he used a metaphor about painting your house:

But what if you painted one side every other year? It suddenly becomes a much more manageable task. It can even be enjoyable, perhaps combined with a barbecue with your neighbors. Plus, your house always looks beautiful.

I chuckled when it occurred to me that we almost always pick a new color when it's time to repaint our home. We don't have an HOA, but I'm not sure I could tolerate a lengthy house color shift, let alone my wife or neighbors appreciating that process. That's neither here nor there though, what I was most pleased to see about the post, was that other people in the Bear blog community had responded on their blogs and Robert had linked back to them as well. It's so nice to see that kind of thoughtful and friendly interaction someplace on the web again. Riffing off of and responding to blog posts on your own blog is almost novel in the social media era, but it shouldn't be.

I've had a minor daily blogging streak1 going since the end of September, but I haven't always felt like I had anything to write about as the end of the day approached. Robert's post and the Bear community's response were a good reminder to me that there's a lot of creative synergy and inspiration to be found on the Bear Discovery feed or in your Feed Reader of choice. Blogging has mostly been a solo activity for me over the years, but tapping back into Robert's original metaphor it's fun to realize it can also be a barbecue with your neighbors too!

  1. I enjoy the challenge, discipline, and commitment required for an ongoing task like this (especially when I'm putting renewed energy into something), but I'm keeping it low-key. A picture and a sentence like I posted yesterday or a microcosm every seven days are just fine.
