📺 Homicide: Life on the Street S1E1 - Gone for Goode 👍
Solid opening episode. I remembered Giardello's board with the red and black names, but the thing that jumped out at me today is how it's used as a narrative shorthand. The homicide department has a lot of detectives and cases that it jumps between, some cases don't get that much screen time, and the board shows when they've completed the job and we're moving on.
The characterization for all the members of the department is outstanding, but I can see why Munch and Pembleton are the ones everyone associates with the show. One thing I didn't pick up on until I was looking at the episode screen shots on IMDB is that Howard, the lone female detective, had 11 names in black and no red. Bolander and Felton only have 2 and 3 black names on their lists respectively.
