🗓 Microcosm - 2024 Apr 1-7

Another good run with the girls today. We did 15 minutes of running today broken up across five segments with two minutes of walking in between. My new shoes felt pretty good and everyone did well today.

First post on Cohost was a question for internet-janitor about the left padding in Decker's text fields. It's only 1px so text really crowds the border, and I'm kind of surprised that it's been this way for its entire existence. I even fired up a classic mac emulator and looked at Hypercard- Apple used even more white space than I was talking about!

I've been working on a palette swatch collection in Asesprite that maps a variety of popular 16-color palettes to the Decker palette. So far WIN16 has been the toughest to align.

Ended up constructing a potentially viable 16-color palette by taking DB32, which was in fact what I had used for my new pixel art avatar, and then dropping all the remaining colors that didn't easily map to the Decker default palette. I saved the resulting palette in Asesprite as DB32-16.

👾 I'm on a weird 16-color palette odyssey right now because I want to find a palette that will work with the 32 x 32 pixel art avatar I came up with recently. Unfortunately, the original palette I used for it was a 32 color one (DB-32 maybe?) and it doesn't quite mesh with the default Decker mac color palette or Pico-8. I'm starting to think I may end up having to create my own.

Haven't been listening to much of anything in the last couple of days after some solid podcast listening on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Another Decker project that occurred to me was putting together a Spurs yearbook to collect my Spurs-related microblog musings, game results, and general feelings about the team throughout the year.
🗓 APR 05 2024 08:17
I've been thinking about how I want to collate the highlights of my microblogging and one thing that occurred to me this week is that it could be pretty interesting to collect them in a Decker zine once a month or so.

TIL: Office 365 does have a dark mode and my eyes are so much happier.

Swatch Internet time is fairly interesting. I hadn't heard of it before encountering it in Decker; it's basically Switzerland-based (UTC +1) base 10 time (first developed by Napoleonic France as part of the metric system) where the unit of time is an 86.4-second beat and there are 1000 beats in a day. A half-hour is equivalent to just under 21 beats, an hour just under 42 beats.

Aargh! My youngest daughter alerted me to our first backyard underground rodent invasion. They've been a problem in our front yard for years, but our backyard has a ton of rock buffers, unfriendly terrain, and stone edging that I assumed would continue to protect it. Today I was greeted by some massive dirt piles. I think they're voles or field mice based on the ones I've successfully trapped in the past and I have not had a lot of luck getting rid of them.

Turns out a fresh GOG 1.6 install of Stardew Valley on Mac crashes if there's no .config folder in the user home directory rather than attempting to create one. It works fine if you manually create the folder after installation.
👾 APR 04 2024 07:09
The latest GOG Stardew Valley post 1.6 release updates failed to work on a couple of my family's Macs much to my kids' disappointment. We're now up to release 1.6.3 so fingers crossed.

Some seriously epic sunrise light played out across my backyard fence for a moment there, but it has already faded.

Decker is my new creative retro computing tool obsession. It has a ton of potential for interactive fiction applications, but it's actually way more flexible and exciting than that with people creating everything from Zines to simple music trackers.

Washington State hires EWU coach David Riley as next head coach, school announces
Riley's regular-season success at Eastern was unbelievably good. I look forward to seeing what he can do at WSU, who were in dire need of a hiring win and I think got one.🏃 APR 02 2024 11:58
I've gone on three easy runs with my younger daughters in the last week and it's interesting to note my muscle soreness progression. My hamstrings are sore today, but prior to yesterday's run my lower quads were experiencing more soreness. I've gotten in plenty of bike rides and walks in the last couple of years, but minimal running so it's interesting to see which leg muscle areas are getting fully utilized again.

One thing that's really appealing to me about creating interactive fiction in Decker vs. Twine is that it that it's got the retro pixel aesthetic that I've always wanted built right in.

Decker: A Multimedia Sketchpad
Stumbled across Decker yesterday and was pretty blown away. It's a Hypercard-inspired multimedia platform by John Earnest for creating and sharing interactive documents, with sound, images, hypertext, and scripted behavior.
