📺 Homicide: Life on the Street S1E1 - Gone for Goode 👍 Solid opening episode. I remembered Giardello's board with the red and black names, but the thing that jumped out at me today is how it's used as a narrative shorthand. The homicide department has a lot of detectives and cases that it jumps between, some cases don't get that much screen time, and the board shows when they've completed the job and we're moving on.

The characterization for all the members of the department is outstanding, but I can see why Munch and Pembleton are the ones everyone associates with the show. One thing I didn't pick up on until I was looking at the episode screen shots on IMDB is that Howard, the lone female detective, had 11 names in black and no red. Bolander and Felton only have 2 and 3 black names on their lists respectively.

My recent nvim foray has now sent me on an alternate terminal diversion as nvim looks like utter crap in Terminal.app if you set it up with kickstart.nvim.

🧙‍♂️ I've enjoyed drafting and playing Bloomburrow, but it's been a tough format for me so far. Rakdos colors seem to be my best performing decks so far.

🎙 Last Word on Spurs bringing the negativity today in their big Newcastle Preview. Today's panelists are marquee signing believers and rate our window accordingly because of the lack of a 6 and established winger.

One thing that's come out of my recent jrnl and nb fiddling is that I'm pretty interested in going all in on Neovim as my terminal editor. I knew nvim had been around for quite a while now, but hadn't realized it's been in development for a decade already, although 1.0 appears to still be a ways off.

After playing with jrnl for a few days starting to see some rough edges that irritate me. Things like the first line of every entry being treated and formatted as a title, undocumented plugin support, and numerous python package dependencies that they have to keep up with. The release schedule is pretty measured and they've been sitting on an awesome heatmap contribution for over a year.

Finding out that Homebrew has a whole bunch of free programming fonts available for installation today was a real game changer for me. They even have commit, the cool design student project monospaced font that improves legibility by kerning certain letter pairs.

AUG 28 2024 10:35

I think jrnl is pretty cool, but still getting the hang of its syntax. It's also been a good excuse to revisit how I have my terminal and default cli editor (Neovim) configured.

AUG 28 2024 08:59

Fiddling around with NeoVim this morning as you do. (the defaults were annoying me)

🏀 Just heard that Gonzaga guard, Steele Venters, suffered an achilles tear and will miss the 2024-25 season. This is so brutal after he missed last season due to an ACL injury.

AUG 27 2024 13:33

Came across two really interesting command line journaling/notetaking apps today: jrnl.sh and nb. Both can be installed via Homebrew in macOS . Of the two jrnl is the most appealing to me because of its simplicity, nb looks ridiculously powerful and featureful. Someone came up with a really sweet heat map export for jrnl, but I don't think it's been released outside the dev branch yet.

⚽️ Manor Solomon on loan to Leeds this season with no buy option. Hope it works out for him and he's able to find some of the promising form he's shown in brief stretches.

🚀 NASA confirms all the speculation (including my own) that the Starliner Crew will in fact be going home via Crew Dragon. Starliner will attempt to return to Earth unmanned in September. The Starliner crew will continue working as part of the ISS team until they return home in February. Even if Boeing somehow succeeds in landing Starliner safely I feel like there's no way NASA can certify them for human spaceflight.

Went for a quick afternoon walk around campus and it felt way hotter than 85°F!

⚽️ Got the pronunciation straight from Lucas Bergvall's own mouth. It is "Berevall" not Burg-vall. Also Pape is in fact "papay".

⚽️🎮 On a whim checked CDKeys and saw that I could get a FM24 Steam key for $20.99 today. Had enough in my PayPal account to cover it so went ahead and pulled the trigger.

⚽️🎮 Probably at the point where I should just wait for Football Manager 2025 rather than getting 2024. Particularly since it's a full revamp and adds support for women's leagues. But at the same time we still don't know when it's actually going to be released and it's probably worth having the last incarnation.

Sounds like Richard Simmons had a significant fall the night before he passed and refused to go get checked out at the hospital. Bummer.

AUG 22 2024 09:01

🤡 Changed up my work routine this week and came in yesterday, had four minor but comically annoying things happen that made me feel like I was some kind of sad-sack character living in a sitcom.

⚽️ Wilson Odobert is the new surprise 25 million £ + add-ons Spurs winger signing from Burnley that I woke up to this morning. Seems to have caught almost everyone by surprise.
