🗓 Microcosm - 2025 Jan 27-31

Verizon's 5G Home works very well at my daughter's downtown Spokane apartment. Verizon's in-app speed test rated it at like 400+ Mbps and the actual throughput I got over ethernet was 93 Mbps down and 22 Mbps up.

On a whim looked up Onyx Storm at my local library while putting some DVDs on hold. 30 regular copies, 103 on the waitlist, 30 audiobooks, 248 on the waitlist, 40 ebook copies, 365 on the waitlist! Yep, that's the third book in a best-selling series.

Warp terminal looks pretty impressive. You get 100 AI queries a month for free too.

Incredible that WSU has 15 wins and 2 losses to 7-17 Pacific.

Even merrysky.net isn't working for me this morning.
🌧️ JAN 31 2025 07:46
We got heavy rain this morning when it was supposed to be snowing. The forecast is for rain the rest of the day anyway, but kind of disappointing.

Finally got back to Platinum 4 in Ranked just in time for the season to end.
⚽️ JAN 30 2025 14:00
THFC beat Elfsborg 3-0 and I can actually listen to some Spurs podcasts again over the next couple of days.

Love how Kulu was able to shift his position just right to legally blow up the defender that was trying to knock him off the ball.

It just occurred to me that one way for legitimate student writers to protect against AI detection false positives is to always use version control as part of their writing process. Not saying it's optimal, but that's what I'd do if I was an undergrad again.

One great discovery from near the end of Wil Wheaton's Still Just a Geek audiobook, is that he has put together some really great Spotify playlists that I need to try out.
🦉 JAN 30 2025 09:11
Finally tracked down a compatible iOS device last night and set my younger daughters up with the music course. The Duolingo multiple account support is a lot better than I realized.
🦉 JAN 30 2025 09:05
I've been keeping my Duolingo streak alive over the last year via the music lessons because I wanted to improve my treble clef reading and keyboard comfort level (most of my musical experience is in the low-brass bass cleff world) and it's worked pretty well.
🍏 JAN 30 2025 08:17
More macOS 15.3 Sequoia update testing to start the day. I had one MacBook update that I left running at the end of the day inexplicably hang, but a shutdown, reboot and second attempt worked fine.
⌚️ JAN 29 2025 13:16
Pebble-based hardware is making a comeback after Google agrees to open source the OS. I've owned two and really liked them. My AppleWatch has superior iOS integration but I don't love the battery life.
🍏 JAN 29 2025 12:15
15.3 dropped this week so I suppose I should update a couple of my test Macs. Don't like the sounds of some of the glitches I've already heard about online though.
🍏⚙️ JAN 29 2025 09:20
Trying out Parallels for the first time in years to see if we can get ArcGIS running for a Mac user. Impressed with how streamlined the Windows 11 setup process is out of the box.
🗞️ JAN 29 2025 08:09
This is old news to anyone who's been paying attention for the last few years, but the NYT's spin on yesterday's Leavitt press briefing and Krugman's explanation for why he left and started his own blog leaves no doubt as to how compromised they are.
⛽️ JAN 29 2025 07:46
Stopped at the gas station to fuel up on the way to work this morning and successully filled my tank for just over $40 rather than the more typical $50 thanks to discounts and timing.

4-5 from 3 and the crowd chanting his name, Nolan Hickman is living large tonight against Oregon State.
🏀 JAN 28 2025 19:45
Think I'm going to watch the GU - Oregon State rematch tonight.
💸 JAN 28 2025 14:47
Downloaded my 2024 W2 today. I usually start on my taxes pretty early, but will probably wait until mid-February to really get going.
🌐 JAN 28 2025 14:17
Verizon 5G Home appears to be the most viable broadband option for my daughter's downtown Spokane apartment so I'm kind of excited to try out a cable internet alternative. I hope it lives up to its potential and is a good value for her.
👾 JAN 28 2025 08:48
The latest Aseprite beta has some intriguing functionality related to text editing and diagonal symmetry. I haven't tried it yet, but it came out long enough ago that I wonder if I should just wait until the official release now.
🥶 JAN 28 2025 07:14
Today's annoying reminder that we're going through a cold dry spell right now (based on years of experience)- itchy skin.

There's a faculty member here at work with a name very similar to my own. My last name name comes before his alphabetically and unfortunately a surprising number of people don't catch the difference when autocomplete kicks in.🙄

I hadn't heard of Chinese AI startup DeepSeek before today, but I'm all for popping the AI bubble we're living in and getting resource consumption back under control.
🌌 JAN 27 2025 07:37
Looked at the planets last night with the kids. Light pollution in our neighborhood was a bit of an issue and Saturn, Neptune, and Venus were too close to the horizon and blocked by trees, but no problems locating Mars and Jupiter.
🤯 JAN 27 2025 07:33
The wildest recent Spokane weather stat that I just learned is that until the streak was broken last week, we had 362 days in a row with a high about 30°F.
🥶 JAN 27 2025 07:26
Last week of January and still cold like I would expect, but dry as a bone. We're well under our average snowfall for December and January.
