🎲 Risk
We've had a couple family game nights this week and expect to do them regularly during Lent as well as an alternative to weekend movie nights. The younger kids in the family are old enough to play more challenging board games if they team up with an adult. Tonight we played Risk and going in I was not very enthused, but it turned out fine and I had fun. We were nowhere near finishing the game when we had to call it quits though.
Going into the game I held the opinion that a computerized version is more fun because it handles all the intricacies of army tracking and battles. It took us a while to figure out what we were doing in the physical game, but it didn't end up being too bad. Afterward, I did check to see if there were any free or open-source implementations. It turns out there is one called Domination that's available in the iPad app store as well as a downloadable Java jar file if you're on some kind of mac or pc. It's not perfect, but it's got a wide variety of rule options and maps. The easy AI still whipped me and I felt like I had the worst luck when I tried it though.
