🍿 The Gorge 👍👍

Movie poster for The Gorge featuring Miles Teller on the left and Anya Taylor-Joy on the right.

I've had my eye on The Gorge since seeing a trailer for it on Apple TV+ in the lead-up to Valentine's Day. The premise looked intriguing and mysterious. The two leads in Anya Taylor-Joy and Miles Teller appeared to have great chemistry and I always enjoy a fun and offbeat romantic movie so I figured I would give it a go. Sunday is typically a movie night at our house, but I'll usually watch my own thing if the family is watching something I don't want to rewatch. That was the case tonight.

I really enjoyed The Gorge overall. It's not highbrow entertainment, but the chemistry, characterizations, and romance were great and there was actually a hint of literary depth as well. The action and thriller elements were intense and it had a good mix of science fiction and horror without all the usual expendable side character deaths. As someone on social media mentioned it was also pretty fun to see Sigourney Weaver in the equivalent of the Paul Reiser role from Aliens. They're very different movies, but there's definitely some thematic and stylistic kinship between the two.

It sounds like this was Apple's most successful exclusive streaming movie launch to date. TV plus really does have a quality lineup of shows these days, but they haven't had as much success with movies. As much as I enjoyed The Gorge I hope it remains a one-off. I certainly wouldn't mind seeing Teller and Taylor-Joy collaborating again in the future though and I definitely want to finally watch Whiplash, Queen's Gambit, and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga soon.
