🦋 Twitter to Bluesky
I finished clearing out all my follows in Twitter today and set my account to private. I was also able to follow 205 accounts on Bluesky for people that I had previously followed or knew of. Additionally, as G. Willow Wilson observed on her account, the major sports teams are also starting to create accounts. That's not crucial to my enjoyment of the Bluesky service, but it's a nice bonus and a real sign of the service's growing momentum. The Bluesky app is also number one in the US iOS App store right now as well.
So what's still left to do? I seem to have 2,750 tweets on my account from 2011 and earlier. I could have sworn that I deleted those a few years back, but I was using some third-party service so perhaps it failed. I may do one more Twitter export and then start deleting tweets manually over time.
I still don't plan to delete the account itself for both sentimental and practical reasons. I forget my original account number, but it was easily in the first thousands. I've also put up links to my Bluesky, Mastodon, and Threads accounts from my account so people can find me elsewhere. Bluesky will get the majority of my social media focus through the end of the year and I'll evaluate how things are going at that point. I'm feeling encouraged though.
