🗽 Week Notes 014
🗓️ // Mar 30, 2025 - Apr 5, 2025
It's the first big nation-wide protests since this week's ridiculous tariffs went into effect. I expect a lot of people to take part. I'm not there yet, but it's going to happen eventually if Trump stays in office for his full term
- Everyone's retirement is absolutely hemorrhaging right now and my understanding is that it's a completely muted response from the markets based on the hopes that Trump will relent or there will be some kind of release.
- Sent another email to my (Republican) Congressman regarding his lack of response to the tariffs in his weekly newsletter. Eastern Washington has a lot of agricultural interests so I'm sure he's been getting an earful from his farming constituents.
- Lots of sick people in our house this week. Had to stay home for half of the day on a day when I normally go into work just to help out with the kids while Mary was working.
- Senator Cory Booker did something amazing this week and Broke Strom Thurmond's 24 hour filibuster record with a speech that was superior in every possible way. It called out everything that the Trump administration is doing wrong and never deviated from the topic. It was on message and from the heart from beginning to end.
Playing
- ⚽️🎮 I beat the Moon team in Bang Average Football on my third try last night, and in fact a decisive two points.
- ⚽️🎮 Psyched to create the USL Super League once the new version of Bang Average Football comes out. The Spokane Zephyr have been on an absolute tear this spring.
- 🧙♂ Starting to think about what my Final Fantasy drafting strategy will be. Not sure if I'm going to approach it the same way as usual.
- 👾 I bought a couple of new games on sale from GOG this week, but haven't had a chance to play them yet.
Watching
- 🏀 The final four is set after the Sweet-16 finished and I think all four number seeds advanced. I had picked 3 out of the 4, but MSU was 6 points short of advancing to the last four.
- 🏀 Gonzaga vs Houston 👍 Houston jumped on the Zags 10 - 2 out of the gate, but the Zags slowly worked their way back into the game and miraculously got it down to 3 with 15 seconds to go. Unfortunately, their season-long Achilles heel reared its head and once again they were unable to execute when the chips were down; their final possession ended in a turnover.
- 🗽 Caught the last hour and a half of Cory Booker's record-breaking filibuster and loved every meaningful minute of it other than really needing a bathroom break that I held off on in solidarity.
Listening
- 🎙 Story Time with Wil Wheaon 👍👍 The first couple of selections have really resonated strongly with me personally. I hope podcast becomes popular enough to continue.
- 🎶 Tom Tomorrow had a fun little post on Bluesky about We Built This City being his most hated song and I feel like that's a pretty great choice. The best part to me is that it's the first song that I specifically remember taping off the radio as a tween four decades ago. It's a super-catchy pop song and my then un-jaded ear immediately latched onto it. Recently the was a hilarious bit on Daredevil Born Again where Mayor Wilson Fisk was subject to back to back renditions of the song by a children's group and then a Latvian one. The unsaid joke in the back of my mind was how did both those groups handle the "Police have got the chokehold!" line?
- 🎙 LeVar Burton Reads is excellent and there's a huge back catalog for me to go through. The Paper Menagerie by Ken Liu (👍👍) was an amazing, emotionally devastating story.
