📚 Week Notes 033
🗓️ // Aug 10, 2025 - Aug 16, 2025
This week was a little atypical for me. I ended up working from home on Monday so that I could get some woodworking help from my father-in-law in the morning. Then later that day, I found out that the AC in my building at work was out indefinitely because the chiller was damaged during an unexpected power outage on Sunday. So I ended up working remotely all week before finally going in on Friday for a brief meeting I needed to do in person.
⚽️ The UEFA Super Cup match with PSG ended up being a surprisingly good game for Spurs as they kept a 2-0 lead through the first 80 minutes. Then a disparity in sub quality allowed PSG to equalize right before full time, and it went to penalties. PSG trailed briefly, but made their last four penalties convincingly while Spurs missed attempts 3 and 4.
📚 Had a really fun evening out with Mary on Thursday, attending my friend Morgan Richter's author signing event at Auntie's Bookstore for her new book, The Understudy. Lots of interesting writing process and publishing industry discussion during the Q & A and the private gathering after at a nearby bar with complementary cocktails and appetizers was pretty cool. It was great to catch up with Morgan in person again after nearly two decades of occasional digital interactions.
📚 Bought The Understudy after the Q&A so Morgan could sign it for me. I'm actually letting Mary read it first since she loves mysteries/thrillers like this, while I'm reading The Divide, which I hadn't gotten around to until now, but has a little bit of a supernatural element that I find appealing.
🥵 Another hot August week overall, and not great timing for building AC to go out. In at least some offices on the main floor, it got up to 87° F! The network guys opened up the data center doors since it still has dedicated AC, and it helped cool off Operations when I went in Friday. The rest of the building is going to be screwed for a while, though by the sounds of it.
Watching
📺 Watched a bunch more of Morgan's When Gen-X Ruled the Multiplex YouTube series and just finished episode 19 about Footloose. The amount of work that went into those is incredible, and they're completely great. As Morgan was quick to point out when I asked about them on Thursday, the main reason she was even able to do them was that she was unemployed at the time. So it's completely understandable that they were a finite project, and she hasn't undertaken another such endeavor since, despite her impressive 4.5K+ subscribers.
⚽️ Spurs bounced back from Wednesday's loss and opened the Premier League with a convincing 3-0 home victory over Burnley this morning despite rotating the midfield. Very interested to see what kind of plan Thomas Frank comes up with for City next weekend.
📺 Dan Da Dan S1E19: Feeling Kinda Gloomy 👍👍 Lots of cool character development in this one. Curious to see what exactly Okarun, Miko, and Turbo Granny are about to do battle with in the music room.
📺 Star Trek: Strange New Worlds S3E6: The Sehlat Who Ate Its Tail 👍👍 Awesome Kirk episode with a wild twist ending. Kind of bummed that there are only four episodes left in the season.
Projects
- 🏡 Successfully updated my home office in a big way. Completed my standing desk upgrade on Wednesday and Thursday wrapped up the small shelf and bulletin board installation I've had in mind for at least a couple of years. The four foot square green felt covered bulletin board was originally part of my teenage bedroom, now it will be the backdrop for any videos I film at my desk.
Playing
- 🧙♂ Took care of my dailies, and Midweek Magic, but took some days off as well. Working on others and trying to stay productive.
Reading
📚 Still slowly working my way through All the Light We Cannot See. The short chapters make it easy to pop in for a quick ten minutes here and there, but I'm sure I'll fully commit soon.
📚 Started The Divide, the first book in Morgan's two-book deal with Knopf that came out a year ago, and I'm already about 80 pages in after just a day.
📚 Picked up some comic book graphic novels while I was the library and started on Batgirl: Year One. I've always been a Marvel guy, but I certainly enjoyed the Arrow-verse TV shows, and I think it's good to expand my horizons in the comics world. I also think my younger daughters will be interested in reading it as well.
Listening
🎙 Started listening to Analog(ue) again after several years away because I really wanted to hear about Myke Hurley's new adventures in parenthood that began with the birth of his daughter this year.
🎙 Tuned into a couple of recent podcasts that Morgan appeared on because I wanted to go into Thursday's event prepared.
