βΎοΈ Week Notes 041
π // Oct 5, 2025 - Oct 11, 2025
This has been a busy, but not particularly productive week for me at home. Work has been a little bit better, but I've also been doing a lot of update research and testing which doesn't always feel particularly productive.
βΎοΈ Watched the most baseball in one sitting that I have in the last 25 years as the Mariners found a way to defeat Detroit 3-2 in 15 entertaining and tension-filled innings. The kids were somewhat puzzled that we suddenly had baseball on television because it's just not a sport I watch regularly, but expressed varying degrees of interest when I explained the significance. Namely it's been roughly 25 years since the Mariners have been remotely this good and they were their grandpa's favorite pro sports team.
β½οΈ Youth soccer season is winding down. I had practice duty on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday which kind of disrupts my after work productivity, but it also meant I was also able to read a lot of comics this week while I was waiting (actively watching practice is not my favorite thing).
π Leaves are starting to turn and it's quite cool in the morning now. I even wore a long sleeve shirt into work at least once this week. We had a bit of a scare with our furnace as it didn't immediately start working when we switched to heating mode, but it eventually sorted itself out without intervention on my part. I will say I don't love getting up and taking a shower at 5:45 am when the house is cold (which I otherwise prefer since it makes layering comfortable).
ποΈ Mary and I finalized our weekend getaway plans for 25th anniversary in early November and made our reservations.
Watching
πΊπ Chad Powers S1E3: Third Quarter ππ This show continues to charm and make me laugh out loud. Great Chad - Ricky episode this week that sets up Chad as QB1 going forward.
πΊ Brooklyn Nine-Nine: Season 5 ππ Got in a couple more episodes from Season 5 this week and continue to love this show. Very much comfort food viewing.
πΊ Slow Horse S5E3: Tall Tales ππ Fun twisty episode, but I was kind of puzzled that the penguins were actually the intended target, except I suppose the mayoral events would have been completely canceled if a bunch of people were blown up.
Reading
π¦ΈββοΈ Started Gail Simone's new 52 Batgirl run and finished Volume 1 and most of Volume 2. Enjoyable, and I think it will be a pretty good follow-up to Batgirl: Year One for my young daughters who really like the character.
π Made a little more progress on The Understudy, and made it a couple of more chapters in. I'm actually enjoying drawing it out and picking it up a few times a week right now, but I think it's close to the point where I'll just start reading and keep reading until the end.
Playing
π§ββ Mainly worked on my daily quests and Midweek Magic, but did slowly work my way through one Quick Draft (currently at 5-1, which is better than I did in many games of Edge of Eternities).
π§ββ Intended to play a few more IF Comp games, but that didn't come to fruition. Hopefully I can get in enough games to vote.
Projects
π‘ Got the garden fenced off last weekend and the dogs promptly broke through a couple of days later when they were both let off leash again. Did some initial reinforcement with old plywood, but need to work on it further tomorrow.
π‘ Replaced the other hinge on the top oven door as it was starting to get sticky. Way simpler since I knew what I was doing, and it wasn't broken in the closed position.
Listening
πΆ πΎ Tron: Ares Motion Picture Soundtrack π Enjoyed listening to the dark and brooding Trent Reznor powered soundtrack quite a bit this week, but wasn't completely blown away in the way that I was by the Tron:Legacy one that Daft Punk did fifteen years ago. The surprisingly soulful duet, Who Wants to Live Forever?, is the track that's sticking with me the most so far.
π πΏ Surely You Can't Be Serious Podcast: Pee-Wee's Big Adventure (1985) vs UHF (1989) ππ Great two-parter comparing two surprisingly good low budget offbeat comedies from the 80's. My parents actually kind of tricked my uncle into going to Pee-Wee's Big Adventure by hyping it up after we went to it as a family which still makes me laugh. I actually want to watch it with my kids now and UHF would be a good one to watch as well. Just need to track them down.
