π Week Notes 056
ποΈ // Jan 18, 2026 - Jan 24, 2026
This week went by pretty quickly for me thanks to the MLK holiday. Unfortunately, our whole routine was thrown off quite a bit thanks to Mary's car being out of commission with a transmission issue of some kind. The silver lining was that it was nice to be able to spend a little more time with Mary in the morning as I dropped her off on the way to work a couple of times.
π€’ Some kind of bug has been making its way through our younger girls this week. I've been a little more congested myself at times, but no cough, nausea, vomiting, and general malaise like they all experienced yet. Fingers crossed.
β½οΈ Spurs got a huge 2-0 Champions League win over Dortmund. It's absolutely wild how well they play in Europe compared to the Premier League and a real sign of how competitive the mid and lower table teams in the EPL. Xavi Simons had his best game at Spurs despite being injured; I'm sure facing a Bundesliga team he knows very well helped his confidence.
π Zags defeated Pepperdine for the 51st consecutive time on Wednesday despite having their two starting forwards out with injury right now. That's a mind-boggling stat to me considering Pepperdine was one of the top teams in the WCC in the late 90s/early 2000s when I started working at Gonzaga.
π No Seahawks until tomorrow when they'll face their other division rival, the LA Rams, as the final obstacle in their quest to reach the Super Bowl again. Moving to the NFC West from the AFC West worked out really well for the Hawks; you know I'm old when I remember all those Denver, KC, and Raiders rivalry games.
Playing
π§ββπ Went 7-1 in my first Lorwyn Eclipsed Premier Draft with a fairly aggro Izzet (splashing white for Sygg- proved completely irrelevant) pixies/goblin deck with minimal elementals and a couple of nice convoke cards. That outcome covered half of the gem total for my mastery pass so suck it Wizards, you're on track to lose the $100 I would have paid for set preorder bundles across the year.
π§ββ Played a fair amount of casual games with the girls this week to help them get their daily quests. Probably need to help them build up their collections and wildcards some more too. Jump-In is the way in that regard.
βοΈ A few multiplayer Minecraft games with the kids, but that's about it. Mostly focused on caving and mining when I did play.
Watchingπ¦Έπ»ββοΈ
πΊ My Hero Academia S2-S3 ππ Finally came back to one of my favorite anime shows after realizing all of the seasons are streaming now. I completely forgot how far I was into the series when I last watched (somewhere in season 5!) and started binge rewatching season 2. I'm almost to season 4 again now. Such a fun and creative take on the "school for unusual, but entirely relatable, students" genre. So many great characters, so much heart!
πΊ Star Trek: Starfleet Academy S1E3 - Vitus Reflux ππ The rivalry with the War College comes to the fore with some fun pranks, combat games, and even a little basketball. I wholeheartedly approve.
πΊ Fallout S2E6 - The Other Player ππ You just can't keep the Ghoul down, or impaled on a long spike as the case may be, but I don't feel like we still fully know who the Other Player is yet, although we're getting closer. Seems like the last two episodes of the season are going to be wild though.
Listening
πΆ I've been on a bit of synth wave exploration kick since discovering the Synth Wave Christmas playlist over the holidays. It's a fun genre that aligns well with my general electronic music affinity and 80s nostalgia.
β½οΈπ Lots of Spurs podcasts this week fueled by the possibility of a managerial change and the perhaps temporary reprieve brought about by the Dortmund win.
Projects
πβοΈ I have an old Kindle 4 that I haven't used in forever (I've had a backlit Paper White for several years and often just use Libby on my phone nowadays). On a whim I decided to see how hard it would be to jail break. Turns out it's fiddly (particularly for a legacy model like the 4), but not all that difficult for an IT guy used to following arcane technical instructions. Being able to use KOReader and epubs directly is amazing, and completely revitalizes the device.
π I did an oil change on my car for the first time in quite a while last weekend. In light of Mary's current car issue, we definitely need to keep it up and running. Unfortunately, at 22 years old, we're probably going to have to replace it within a year or two as well. All the more reason to get to bike commuting this spring.
