I've been using git a little bit at a time for years so my actual comfort and conceptual model of how it all works is not very strong. Julia Evans of Wizardzines fame has been putting in a lot of effort on understanding and explaining git recently and I particularly appreciated her comics explaining HEAD and detached HEAD state.
