🫎 Week Notes 036
🗓️// Aug 31, 2025 - Sep 6, 2025
This was a nice short week thanks to the Labor Day holiday. Soccer practice also started up for our three younger daughters again, although my oldest's practice was cancelled because of the heat and the very soft parents of her teammates. Great to get a reminder right out of the gate for why we were looking into alternatives during the summer.
⚽️ Huge Spurs bombshell midmorning on Thursday when it was announced that Daniel Levy would be stepping down from his role as chairman of Tottenham Hotspur FC after nearly 25 years in the position. All signs point to a forced resignation as Joe Lewis's children begin to exert control. No sign of a sale yet, just a renewed commitment to winning and spending money to improve the team.
🌅 Red Sun season rolled in this week with a noticeable drop in air quality and visibility, although thankfully it's been in the low 100s rather than outright hazardous. It seems to be an issue across the state with similar conditions all the way to Seattle.
🫎 The moose cow that comes by our neighborhood like clockwork at the end of every summer brought two calves this year! I was moving sprinklers in the front yard and heard our dogs barking, so I knew something was up, but still a little freaky to walk around the corner of our house and see them across our yard.
🥵 Had a one-day AC scare where it seemed to quit working in the evening on Monday, but replacing the air intake filter seemed to resolve the issue and there was no sign of ice on the coils when I checked Tuesday morning. Plan to finally clean the heat exchanger coils outside soon as well.
🏡 Discovered the neighbors have a broken sprinkler head that was geysering and flooding our side yard. Most of the grass there can absorb the extra water, but there's enough runoff that it was reaching bare dirt where the dogs can start a mud pit. Left a note for the neighbors, and they were quite appreciative since their sprinklers run early before they're out and about.
Playing
🧙♂ Did a few Edge of Eternities drafts with okay results. Got to 4 wins with at least one of them. Played a little bit more this week, but still skipped some days.
🎮 It's been Hollow Knight week for Houston as he beat the original on the Nintendo Switch that Mary's brother handed down to us, and then he immediately began playing Hollow Knight: Silk Song this week.
⚽️🎮 FM26 gameplay footage dropped this week and looks really promising. I'm occasionally tempted to fire up FM24, but holding off for the new game. Still have lots of Bang Average Football I want to do in the meantime.
Watching
📺 Dan Da Dan S1E22 - The Secret Art of Being Attractive 👍👍 Hilarious retcon episode that introduces a weird classmate who has been obsessed with Okarun all along and finally initiates contact just as they track down the second golden ball.
📺 Murderbot 👍👍 Absolutely loved the first season of the Apple TV science fiction comedy based on Martha Wells's award-winning series. Alexander Skarsgard is fantastic, but the rest of the cast is great as well. So much heart in this one, and elated that season 2 has already been green-lit.
⚽️ Caught the end of the Zephyr - Brooklyn game and was feeling pretty down about the start of their season until an amazing equalizer from distance by Emma Jaskaniec salvaged the 2-2 draw on the road.
Reading
📚 Soccer practice means tons of reading time and I finally got several chapters into The Understudy, the second mainstream novel by my friend Morgan Richter.
🦸♀️ Batgirl: Year One 👍 Wrapped this one up this week and enjoyed it, but found the flashback and scene changes overly subtle to the point of confusion. I normally love flashbacks, reveals, and perspective shifts but these annoyed me. Shared with my younger daughters and they loved it so I'm going to be hitting up the library for a lot more Batgirl.
🦸🏻 NIghtwing 1: Better than Batman 👍👍 About half way through and loving all the fakeouts and surprises so far. Need to get this wrapped up this weekend since it's due Monday.
🦸♀️ Ironheart: Born to Fly - A couple of chapter into this and it looks like a lot of the material they based the MCU series on. Enjoying it, and N.A.T.A.L.I.E just showed up but no firm judgement yet.
Projects
💻 Lots of intel Macbooks to upgrade this week because of the Zero Day vulnerability. Mary's mom just gave us her old 13" MacBook Air (probably my all-time favorite MacBook design), so I spent the last couple of days getting it up to speed and renamed it batgirl. We've had the good fortunate to receive multiple Mac hand-me-downs from family and friends this year.
🖥️ I've been working on refreshing my primary desktop iMac all week and getting it up to speed. I'm a huge fan of not using Migration Assistant and starting anew when you get the chance.
🌐 My annual blot.im service was up so finally cancelled and moved axodys.com over to Bear Blog as a simple couple of pages site explaining its history and pointing to other things I'm doing like this blog and my bluesky account.
🌐 Cancelled my uberspace.de account and plan to redirect octobloc.xyz via a CloudFlare tunnel to a local Mac mini I'll be using to host simple web projects like my microblog going forward.
Listening
⚽️ So many Spurs podcasts this week in the wake of the Daniel Levy ouster.
🎙 Ink to Film: Martha Wells Reflects on "Murderbot" S:01 | Creative Conversations (WORLDON 2025 LIVE) 👍👍 Fantastic podcast interview with Martha Wells about how her book series became a successful Apple TV+ series. So much unusual luck and good fortune that we're all benefiting from.
📚🎧 Confirmed that the audiobooks for the whole Murderbot Diaries series are on Spotify Premium, so I'll definitely be working my way through those before season 2.
