๐ธ Week Notes 068
๐๏ธ // Apr 12, 2026 - Apr 18, 2026
Finished up taxes just in time this week. We were kind of shocked by how much smaller our return was compared to past years once I plugged Mary's income in; we're still figuring out how to set up Mary's W4's now that she's got a couple of part time hourly roles. The other issue is that she has a couple of gigs that fall under 1099 income as well with no deductions. My own half of the income was pretty straight forward this year as I didn't have any significant side hustles last year.
๐ฎ We hosted a baby shower for our oldest daughter, Eawyn, and her fiancรฉ, James, yesterday evening at this cool new local non-traditional library called The Hive. It has no books or computers, instead it's a free public event space, with a ton of different sized rooms and spaces that community members can reserve. It was the perfect venue for our needs, Mary put together the whole thing, and assembled a couple of street taco bars to feed the 40 or so friends and family that showed up. It made for a hectic afternoon for our family getting everything setup and then cleaned up, but was a great way to celebrate the couple and their soon to arrive baby boy.
๐ค Signed up for Claude Pro Wednesday morning during the one day that it had a ton of outages. Took me three tries, but it eventually worked. I immediately put it to work figuring out some computer configuration tasks at home and at work that I've wanted to do previously, but was always stymied by the learning curve. I now have a home server that can host various containers via podman, and I finally figured out how to quickly create my own AutoPkgr recipes for applications that aren't already in any of the GitHub repositories.
โฝ๏ธ Soccer practice started back up this week. Monday I was able to hang out in my car and listen to a podcast while watching S's practice, but Wednesday I was fully exposed to a very chilly and windy practice for J. We've got three games to go to today and it's going to make for a very busy Saturday with no time for watching Spurs - Brighton or much else.
Playing
โ๏ธ Played a little bit of Minecraft testing out the local server that Claude helped me set up in a container. Performance seems good and the biome I started out in was cool to me: sand dunes by the shore as well as some big spruces. Unfortunately it was also night so I immediately had to swim out to a little sandbar for safety. I haven't died yet or invited the kids to test it out either, but I probably will soon. My original plan was to copy over our established shared Epic World, but now I'm curious to explore the new world further first.
๐งโโ Played a little bit this week to keep up on my Daily Quests, but am mostly behind on my weekly total still. The girls wanted to get in some time this week getting their Daily Quests in so I helped them with that during time I would have played.
Watching
๐บ Daredevil: Born Again S2E5: The Grand Design ๐๐ Vincent D'Onofrio is such a ridiculously good actor playing the role he was absolutely born to play, that he even made me shed a few tears for the Kingpin this week. Absolutely loved all the flashbacks and how they tied into the present day storyline.
๐บ For All Mankind S2E4: Open Source ๐๐ Wild Kurigan revelations that I didn't expect Alex to be the one to figure out, and fun Alita on Mars moments. Not sure how I feel about yet another troubled Stevens character in Gordo's grown-up grand daughter, Avery, particularly when she's going to be a space marine presumably deployed against Mars colonists. But Dani's pulling for her and that should mean something.
Projects
๐ Now that I've got a functional externally accessible web server I'd like to add some php support and possibly some additional subdomains in the future for additional one-off kind of things. I went with nginx as my web server which I've used on other projects over the years, but I am by no means an expert in.
๐ก It's time to start putting in some work on our yard again as well. Mary is very eager to see progress on our front yard and we've had okay growth in spots, but still have a lot of dandelions. I need to get out tomorrow and start getting to work on the post winter matted grass and general thatch build up. I think there are also some spots that could use a bit of mowing as well.
